Here he is, first one in line, Roman Gabriel, running, knees-high, through the ropes. I remember watching him run this drill in the peak August heat of Rams summer training camp, Fullerton, California. Gabe followed up this drill with multiple drenching, wind-sprints. Never once crumbling. Never once sighing out. Never once throwing in the towel. Gabe went through each drill and sprint with pure equanimity.
You could say this was my first experience witnessing what yogis refer to as Stirha.
Stirha means Stable.
Stirha is ability to remain equipped, mentally, physically and emotionally, while doing something extremely challenging. This is something all great athletes practice. It's precisely how advanced yoga practitioners train. If you're in for the long haul, it's the only way to be.
